A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Mohawk.

Doubleheader

Trainer Dave Menary enjoyed a successful Saturday at Woodbine Mohawk Park, sending out the top two finishers in the night’s ninth contest before scoring again in the 11th.

Bruno No No (1-5) and Brue Hanover (3-1) got the ball rolling for Menary with a pair of impressive efforts in the first half of the double dip, with the former finishing 1 ¼-lengths ahead of his stablemate.

A 6-5 exacta paid $4 flat.

Horizon Seelster kept the Menary momentum going two starts later, delivering a confident two-length tally with driver Louis-Philippe Roy in tow.

At 5-1, she paid $13.70.

Superior Delight got the job done for trainer Kyle Fellows at 9-1 in the 10th tilt on Mohawk’s Saturday program.

The powerful come-from-behind victory, also with Roy in the sulky, represented Superior Delight’s second trip to the winner’s circle this season – the first coming on January 10.

The 4-year-old Bettor’s Delight mare has been a constant presence on the podium throughout her 46-start career, compiling a standout 19-14-6 line ($176,830).

As the third choice Saturday night, Superior Delight paid $21.30.

It was twice as nice for Honolulu Vacation on Sunday evening.

A 5-year-old son of Betterthancheddar, the bay recorded a 1 1/2-length score in the eighth race to notch his eighth career win. Bred, trained and owned by Cody Hawkins, Honolulu Vacation, with Daryl Thiessen in the race bike, stopped the teletimer in 1:52.2, marking a new lifetime-best for the 71-race veteran.

Now sporting a record of 8-5-9, along with $124,40 in career purse earnings, Honolulu Vacation paid $13.50 for his latest victory.

TORONTO, April 10, 2026 – Twice a month, Woodbine Mohawk Park will profile a Standardbred connected to the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society (OSAS).

This week, we have a double feature starring Frightful Watch and Weatherly, who have remained side-by-side after retiring from their respective racing careers in 2021.

The pair, who were stablemates in trainer Julie Walker’s barn, reunited later that year after being adopted into the same family.

While they found themselves back in the OSAS program the following year, Frightful Watch and Weatherly were adopted again, this time by Lisa and Rob Lee.

The bonded bays arrived at the Lee’s 60-acre Oro-Medonte, Ontario farm last October and have been nothing but a pleasure since that time.

“The boys love treat time,” said Lisa. “They stand in their spot ready, neighing and licking their lips waiting for their treats. They are pretty funny. Both Wes [Weatherly] and Kevin [Frightful Watch] are such gentle souls.

“Here is Wes [right] with my daughter, and I am on Kevin [left]. This would be my daughter’s first time riding a horse. There was no doubt that Wes was safe. He was the same with Rob. Kevin was equally happy to give me my first ride after many, many years out of the saddle.

Lisa with Kevin (Frightful Watch) and her daughter with Wes (Weatherly)

“Both boys are a joy to have on the farm.”

Fun fact #1: Weatherly enjoyed a successful 144-start racing career, displaying dependable durability to earn over $212,000 (15-17-19).

Fun fact #2: Frightful Watch only made two starts before hanging up the horseshoes. However, he has always borne a strong connection to OSAS through his dam, Artsplace daughter Dianes Place, who started her career in the stable of Hall of Fame horseman and member of OSAS’ board of directors, Bill O’Donnell.

Can you share some insights into Frightful Watch’s personality?

“I would describe Kevin as sensitive, cautious and curious. He loves people and attention. His eyes are so soft, and he looks like he looks deep into your soul. It was interesting learning about him and Wes. I thought that Wes would rely on Kevin, but it is actually Kevin that is looking for Wes. Both are calm and easy to work around.”

Rob and Frightful Watch, now Kevin

What are some of Frightful Watch’s favourite routines or ways to spend the day?

“He loves to eat, like most horses. They are often found not far from each other, near the hay bale. They currently live with two mares and the girls definitely boss them around. If you are busy doing something, he is the first one to inspect. If he can help, he is there. If he could talk, I’m sure he would be saying ‘Hey, what ya doing? Can I help?’”

What’s one memorable moment that shows Weatherly’s unique character or spirit?

“The only one that comes to mind is his great escape. One day, shortly after being with us, he escaped the pen. There is a small gate by the pond that was open, and Weatherly adventured out to the green grass on the other side. He visited the other pen where he found the minis he once met before at the Mollicas – he maybe even shared a paddock with them.

“The minis then broke out, and when Rob looked out, he quickly put on his boots, went to put his halter on and Wes turned and went back into his pen – more or less saying, ‘I know. I know. I’m not supposed to be out here.’”

What are some of the activities you and Weatherly enjoy doing together?

“Wes loves people. He is always the first to the gate. Wes and I are working on our communication skills; he is showing me his leadership skills. Both boys will be joining my EAL [Equine Assisted Learning] program in the Spring. I acquired my equine assisted learning facilitator certification in 2018 in the Dreamwinds-Cartier Farms program.

“I have been looking for the perfect horses to add to my herd to start facilitating at my home farm. Wes has the experience and leadership to be an excellent teacher. Obviously, we look for safe, friendly horses but they also need to embrace the opportunity to work with my clients and provide a positive experience where they can learn and feel safe. Both boys easily adapt to new obstacles.”

Lisa and Weatherly, now Wes

These two have been together for quite some time now. How do they interact when they’re together? How do they complement each other?

“Again, I mistakenly thought that Wes would rely heavily on Kevin. Wes lost his eye as a youngster, I am told, but he manages very well on his own. Kevin is a little more needy than Wes. Kevin is more sensitive, while Wes seems to be able to take a joke. They are never far away from each other.”

What lessons or joys have you discovered from having both Frightful Watch and Weatherly in your life?

“Frightful and Weatherly are a great addition to our farm. We hope that they will continue to grow and flourish. Unfortunately, they have only been with us over the last six months, and it has been winter, so they have adapted well to the quietness of our farm. We generally don’t have a lot going on over the winter – they have spent a lot of time as farm ornaments – but their work will start in May once the ground is ready and the snow is gone.”

Founded in 1996, OSAS is an approved charitable organization committed to assisting in the adoption and relocation of retired and non-racing Standardbred horses within Ontario. A primary mandate of the program is to showcase the versatility of the breed to horse lovers unfamiliar with harness horses.

OSAS, which strives to educate and assist in the retraining and management of Standardbreds, relies heavily on volunteers and temporary foster homes to carry out its mission.

Those interested in getting involved with OSAS and its cause can reach out at [email protected] or call 905-339-6748, for more information.

A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Mohawk.

Poseidon adventure

A valiant final quarter proved the difference for Poseidon Seelster in the second $40,000 Open Pace on Woodbine Mohawk Park’s Saturday evening card.

Paired with driver Bob McClure, the 9-year-old son of Sunshine Beach–Porsche Seelster paced neck-and-neck with 2-5 choice Brue Hanover throughout the contest before coming home in :25.4 to edge his rival by a head.

Poseidon Seelster has now made consecutive visits to the winner’s circle, improving his record to 5-0-2 from 11 starts this season.

Trained by Donald Lindsay, who co-owns the bay with Paul Kleinpaste, William Alempijevic and Garth Bechtel, Poseidon Seelster (8-1) paid $19.20.

Poseidon Seelster.
Shining bright

A down performance in his last outing didn’t deter Stonebridge Helios from bouncing back in a major way on Saturday at Mohawk.

In the five hole for the night’s 11th fixture, the 7-year-old son of Sunshine Beach–Ken Doll J took control of the $18,000 tilt at the X and never looked back, extending his advantage to a final margin of 3 ½ lengths.

The iron-tough outing represented Stonebridge Helios’ first win of the young season and 16th overall across 65 starts (16-8-9; $807,557).

Trained by Paul Court for owners Jesse Dragojevic and Scott Enman, the veteran bay paid $13.30 at 5-1.

Stonebridge Helios.
Dynamic duo

Driver Jody Jamieson and Unison pulled off the 11-1 upset in Sunday evening’s first dash.

A gelded son of Hes Watching, Unison had to work overtime down the lane to valiantly fend off a pair of foes, eking out a neck victory in a time of 1:58.0.

Trained by Paul McKenzie, Unison now has eight career wins, to go along with 27 top-three finishes from 64 starts.

He paid $15.90 for his latest trip to the winner’s circle.

A look at some of the top highlights from the past weekend of racing at Mohawk.

Surfing to victory

Makorori N tracked down his second win on Canadian soil with a gutsy come-from-behind effort in the eighth race on Woodbine Mohawk Park’s Saturday night program.

With driver Jody Jamieson in tow, the 5-year-old New Zealand import showed great resolve, powering home in :27.2 to vault past then-leader Major Threat and hit the wire a head in front.

The hard-fought triumph marked Makorori N’s first win since his maiden start in Ontario, which came February 21 at Mohawk.

Now up to 2-2-0 across five starts this season for owner M T Stables Ontario Inc., Makorori N (7-2) paid $9.30.

Makorori N (inside).
To the Victor…

Trainer Victor Puddy left his mark on the penultimate contest on Saturday’s 13-race card, sending out stablemates and one-two finishers Livinthebeachlife and Legion Seelster.

While seeing these two atop the final standings was the most likely betting outcome, Livinthebeachlife, as the 2-1 second choice, flipped the script on his fellow Puddy trainee and 1-2 favourite Legion Seelster.
