Piping Hot

A crisp outing earned Claret Beret the sweet upset over heavily favoured Nitrogen (4-5) in Saturday’s $1.25 million Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn Park.

All eyes were on the latter, and rightfully so, ahead of the 1 1/16-mile main track tilt for fillies and mares 4-year-old’s and up.

However, Nitrogen and her six graded stakes titles didn’t have an answer for Claret Beret, who took control at the stretch and pulled away with confidence for the 4 ½-length score.

The first Grade 1 trophy of the Not This Time mare’s 19 start career (7-1-3) followed her maiden stakes win – the Grade 3 Royal Delta – last time out on February 14.

At 8-1 Saturday, Claret Beret paid $19.60.

Causing a Ruckus

Mad House brought the roof down with a hard-nosed half-length tally in the $500,000 Count Fleet (G3), Saturday at Oaklawn Park.

In good form following a successful season debut on March 6 at Tampa Bay Downs, the 4-year-old Vekoma gelding shot out of the gate with purpose in the six-furlong Count Fleet.

A determined Mad House made setting the pace a priority and did everything in his power to prevent 2-1 choice Roll On Big Joe from disrupting that.

The gritty victory elevated Mad House to 6-1-1 with just over $603,000 across 12 starts for James Thares, who purchased the chestnut for $47,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

At 9-1, he paid $20.20.

Two-for-One

Segesta and Expensive Queen each wanted the top spot in Saturday’s $650,000 Jenny Wiley (G1T) and both got their wish after reaching the wire at the exact same time (1:40.98).

The dead-heat between the top two betting choices had the Keeneland faithful in a frenzy, as Expensive Queen rallied hard late to catch Segesta, who gained command at the stretch call.

The shared score resulted in Segesta’s fourth career graded title and fifth win from 12 starts for breeder/owner Juddmonte, and the first at the level for Farfellow Farms’ Expensive Queen.

As the 3-2 choice, Segesta paid $2.84, while Expensive Queen (5-2) paid $3.46.

Ahead of the Curve

Upset wins are back in fashion thanks to Trendsetter, who pulled off the surprise victory in Saturday’s $400,00 Lexington (G3) at 32-1.

Back at Keeneland for the first time since a fifth in October’s Indian Summer Stakes, the sophomore son of Modernist–Suyapa exercised great patience before vaulting to the top of the nine-horse pack at the stretch and separating for the smooth 2 ¼-length triumph.

After a trio of promising showings to begin the season, Trendsetter finally got over the hump to secure his first stakes success for owner Davant Latham of Midway Racing.

Now up to 3-1-1 ($421,962) through eight starts, Trendsetter paid $66.68.

Early Arrival

There was no slowing In Our Time in the 29th running of the $400,000 Giant’s Causeway (G2T), Sunday at Keeneland.

Out to avenge a difficult ninth-place result in her season debut – the Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G2T) – In Our Time looked comfortable and full of conviction in a dazzling display of speed along the inside.

The 5-year-old Not This Time mare is now a graded stakes winner for owners Resolute Racing and Miller Racing and sports a 5-6-2 line from 17 starts.

At 5-1 on Sunday, she paid $12.88.

Look No Further

Expectations were high for Further Ado ahead of Saturday’s $1.25 million Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland, and the 4-5 favourite choice responded with a dominant 11-length triumph.

It was the largest margin of victory the key Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race has seen since Sinister Minister’s electrifying 12 ¾-length tally in 2006.

Further Ado now turns his sights to the 152nd Run for the Roses, coming May 2 at neighbouring Churchill Downs.

The sophomore Gun Runner colt has fond memories at the historic Louisville oval, namely, a Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) score last November.

Trained by Brad Cox for owner Spendthrift Farm, Further Ado’s latest conquest paid $3.70.

Contented

So Happy left his connections delighted after reaching the winner’s circle 2 ¾ lengths clear in Saturday’s $500,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1).

Competing for owners Norman Stables and Saints or Sinners, the colt, trained by Mark Glatt, showed impressive poise to not only catch 6-5 choice Potente but pull away for the confident triumph.

So Happy, who has enjoyed a strong start to his sophomore season with a pair of stakes wins (Grade 2 San Vicente on January 10), will now be rewarded with a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.

At 7-1 on Saturday, he paid $16.60.

Seasoned Veteran

Albus certainly didn’t look like a horse with no experience above the maiden level in a hard-nosed conquest of the $750,000 Wood Memorial (G2), Saturday at Aqueduct.

Paired with rider Jaime Torres, the 3-year-old Yaupon colt overcame a challenging start to reel in then leader Napoleon Solo at the stretch and held firm to thwart a spirited comeback attempt from 38-1 foe Right to Party.

The 1 ¼-length victory secured Albus’ spot in next month’s Kentucky Derby, where he will join fellow Riley Mott charge Incredibolt in the starting gate.

Now 2-0-1 ($436,288) from four starts for owner Pin Oak Stud, Albus, at 11-1 in the Wood Memorial, paid $25.78.

Never a Doubt

Meaning made the most of her billing as the 4-5 favourite in Saturday’s $200,000 Santa Anita Oaks (G2), delivering a confident two-length score for owners Bridlewood Farm and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners.

Entering the 1 1/16-mile contest off a Las Virgenes Stakes win on February 8, also at Santa Anita, the 3-year-old Gun Runner filly kept the momentum going with rider Juan Hernandez, who took the place of Flavien Prat.

Meaning is now three-for-four ($307,000) to begin her career and will likely make her next start in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 1 after picking up 100 qualifying points.

She paid $3.80.

Smooth Stride

Always a Runner’s tremendous closing speed was on full display in a dazzling come-from-behind triumph of Saturday’s $200,000 Gazelle (G3) at Aqueduct.

Working with rider Dylan Davis, the 3-year-old Gun Runner filly endured a physical first few steps before settling along the inside. Once in position, Always a Runner began her gradual ascent up the ladder but still trailed by 5 ½ lengths at the stretch.

Undeterred by the gap, the Chad Brown charge dug in, tracking down leader Pashmina and separating for the 1 ¼-length victory.

Still unbeaten through two starts ($129,200), Always a Runner punched her ticket to the Kentucky Oaks with the win.

At 9-2, she paid $11.38.

A Powerful Display

Speedway Stables’ Potente became 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points richer after a valiant triumph in the $200,000 San Felipe (G2) this past Saturday at Santa Anita.

Sent off as the fourth choice in the field of seven for Hall of Fame conditioner Bob Baffert, the 3-year-old Into Mischief colt kept pace with the leaders deep into the stretch before rocketing ahead in the final sixteenth to steal victory from 67-1 rival Robusta by a head.

Potente, who fetched a $2.4 million price tag at Fasig-Tipton’s 2024 The Saratoga Sale, remained perfect through two starts, elevating his current prize yield to $162,000.

At 8-1 Saturday, he paid $18.20.

Part the Seas

A shortened lineup in Saturday’s $300,000 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) ended up playing right into veteran gelding British Isles’ favour.

The absence of contenders Skippylongstocking and Westwood created a condensed five-horse field, leaving not British Isles, but multiple graded stakes placed bay Just a Touch, as the heavy 3-5 choice.

However, it was the former, under rider Diego Herrera, who coasted to a dominant 4 ½-length score.

The 5-year-old son of Justify–Purely Hot’s first stakes tally, graded or otherwise, was his fourth from 24 starts (4-6-4; $551,826) for owners Slam Dunk Racing, Deborah Baltas, and Cynthia McClanahan.

He paid $16.40 at 7-1.

As Planned

A masterstroke in Saturday’s $400,000 Azeri (G2) saw Majestic Oops spring the upset over heavily favoured superstar Nitrogen, who finished third.

Traversing the main track at Oaklawn for the second time in as many starts, Majestic Oops looked plenty comfortable over 1 1/16 miles, exercising great patience while the dash developed.

Once in striking position, the still fresh daughter of Majestic Harbor–Miss Oops angled out wide and thwarted every challenge to reach the wire three-quarters-of-a-length clear.

Trained by Dan Ward for owners Medallion Racing, Evan Trommer, Agave Racing Stable, and Sheila Regan, Majestic Oops now sports a 35: 9-11-4 line with over $952,000 in the bank.

At 9-1 in the Azeri, she paid $20.60.

Time to Pounce

The Puma punched his ticket to the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) with a dazzling display in Saturday’s $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs.

Entering the 1 1/16-mile affair off a runner-up finish in his pro debut (January 10) and third in the Sam. F Davis Stakes last time out, The Puma broke through courtesy of a dynamic push for home that kept him three-quarters-of-a-length safe at the wire.

The Essential Quality colt’s flagship victory vaulted him to second on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 56 points, behind only Paladin.

As the fourth choice Saturday, The Puma (7-1) paid $16.80.

Coming Through

Forced Entry continued her steady progression with a career-best outing in the $100,000 Santa Ysabel (G3) on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Santa Anita.

Working out of post five with rider Juan Hernandez aboard, the 3-year-old daughter of Charlatan–Violent Times showed impressive poise and patience while allowing the 1 1/16-mile contest to take shape.

A clear path eventually presented itself during the push for home and the freshman filly powered right through for the decisive 1 ¾-length score – clinching trainer Bob Baffert’s sixth straight Santa Ysabel title.

Now 2-0-0 through three starts for owners Michael Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, Forced Entry also collected 50 qualifying points towards May’s Kentucky Oaks (G1).

At 5-2, she paid $7.60.

On the Hunt

Stalking the top prize and 20 Kentucky Derby (G1) qualifying points in Saturday’s $175,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, Great White confidently asserted himself as the apex predator.

Eager to put a fifth in January’s Leonatus Stakes – also at Turfway Park – in the rearview, the 3-year-old son of Volatile–Kelly Bag struck in the upper stretch and held firm against a game Fulleffort (2-1) for the win by a neck.

Trained by John Ennis, who co-owns the gelding with Three Chimneys Farm, Great White’s first stakes badge came with a 15-1 billing.

Now 2-0-0 with nearly $166,000 in prizes from three starts, Great White paid $32.32.

Over the Goal Line

A razor-sharp effort in Saturday’s $150,000 Nodouble Breeders’ Stakes earned local standout Touchdown Arkansas his first career stakes score.

Testing the familiar confines of Oaklawn Park, the 5-year-old Bee Jersey chestnut let the race develop before seizing control in the final furlong and taking it to the house three-quarters-of-a-length clear.

The impressive outing represented a complete one-eighty from Touchdown Arkansas’ stakes and professional debut – a ninth-place finish in the Rainbow Stakes on April 6, 2024.

Up to 3-1-0 with $257,500 (six starts) banked for owner Lewis Mathews Jr., Touchdown Arkansas, at 4-1, paid $10.

An Oath Upheld

Baron Thoroughbreds’ colt Jack’s Promise kept his word with a dazzling upset victory in Saturday’s $125,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint at 11-1.

Competing from post two with rider Rajiv Maragh aboard, Jack’s Promise made an early push for the lead but settled comfortably into second.

Once in striking position, the 4-year-old son of Promises Fulfilled–Malibu Treasure found a seam and sped ahead for the uncontested three-length tally.

No doubt a memorable stakes debut for Jack’s Promise, the bay, trained by Dale Romans, also cracked the $300,000 career earnings milestone (16: 6-3-0).

He paid $24.80 as the fifth choice in the field of eight.

Follow the Leader

Taj Mahal, who led every step of the way in Saturday’s $100,000 Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park, needed every ounce of energy to keep it that way at the wire.

In just his second career start, the 3-year-old Nyquist colt was tasked with warding off a ferocious challenge from even-money favourite Let’s Go Lando, who followed in near lockstep for most of the one-mile contest.

Taj Mahal never wavered, however, and held firm to reach the finish line a neck ahead.

The nerve-testing tally completed a stakes sweep for the wife-husband trainer-jockey team of Brittany and Sheldon Russell, who captured the $100,000 Wide Country one race earlier with Peach Tie.

Taj Mahal, at 2-1, paid $6.60.

Wish Granted

It’s not easy staying perfect five starts into a career, but that’s exactly what Gratefully did, while picking up her first stakes trophy, in the $100,000 Wishing Well, Saturday at Santa Anita.

Coming off a smooth 3 ¾-length triumph in her season debut on January 8, also at Santa Anita, Gratefully’s maiden stakes appearance wasn’t nearly as low-stress.

Teamed with rider Florent Geroux, the 4-year-old Laoban filly faced constant pressure from 5-2 foe Saratoga Special (IRE), but showed tremendous resolve to thwart every threat and reach the wire a head clear.

Gratefully, as the even-money choice, paid $4.

Matthew Lomon, for Woodbine

Scorching, trained by John Charalambous for owners Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch, lost by a nose in Sunday’s $250,000 Cup & Saucer Stakes, but was elevated to first after the winner was disqualified. Ridden by Patrick Husbands, the son of Mo Town returned $7.20 for the win.
